The task: Split each full name into a first name and a last name.

1 Watch how it is done

  1. Step 1: First name: text before the space

    =LEFT(A4,FIND(" ",A4)-1)

    • Click B4.
    • Type =LEFT(A4,FIND(" ",A4)-1) and press Enter.
    • FIND gives the position of the space. LEFT takes everything before it.
    • Drag the fill handle down.
  2. Step 2: Last name: text after the space

    =MID(A4,FIND(" ",A4)+1,100)

    • Click C4.
    • Type =MID(A4,FIND(" ",A4)+1,100) and press Enter.
    • Drag the fill handle down.
