Excel Chart Title from a Cell (a title that updates itself)

A typed chart title goes stale — “Sales Sep 2026” still says September in October. Link it to a cell and it looks after itself.

Steps

1. In a cell (say A1) type or build the title: ="Sales — " & TEXT(B1, "mmm yyyy") where B1 holds the month’s date.
2. Click the chart title once so it is selected (not editing inside it).
3. Click in the formula bar, type =, then click cell A1. It shows =Sheet1!$A$1.
4. Press Enter.

The title now shows whatever A1 shows.

Put the total in the title

="Total sales: " & TEXT(SUM(C2:C13), "#,##0")

Two lines

="Sales by region" & CHAR(10) & "Q3 2026"

Same trick for axis titles and text boxes

Select the axis title, type = in the formula bar, click a cell. Works for any text box on a chart too.

Check it worked

Change A1. The chart title changes the moment you press Enter.

Common mistakes

Typing = inside the title box. That just shows the text “=A1”. Select the title, then use the formula bar at the top.

No chart title to click. Chart › + › tick Chart Title first.
