How to Copy Visible Cells Only in Excel (skip hidden rows)

Copy a list with hidden rows and Excel often pastes the hidden rows too. Filtered lists are usually fine in Microsoft 365, but rows hidden by hand or grouped are not.

The shortcut: Alt + ;

  1. Select the range.
  2. Press Alt+; (semicolon). Faint lines appear around each visible block.
  3. Ctrl+C, click the destination, Ctrl+V.

Mac: Cmd+Shift+Z.

With the ribbon

Home › Find & Select › Go To Special › Visible cells only › OK. Then copy. See Go To Special.

One-click button

File › Options › Quick Access Toolbar › All Commands › Select Visible Cells › Add.

Pasting into a filtered list

Different problem: Excel pastes into hidden rows too. Paste into an unfiltered area, or use a helper column and fill down while filtered — Ctrl+D fills visible cells only.

Totals of visible rows

Sum visible cells only with SUBTOTAL.
