How to Make Excel Cells Bigger (wider, taller, or all the same size)
You can’t resize one cell on its own — width belongs to the whole column and height to the whole row.
Drag to resize
- Wider: drag the right edge of the column letter.
- Taller: drag the bottom edge of the row number.
Fit the contents automatically
Double-click the right edge of the column letter. The column snaps to its longest entry. More in AutoFit columns and AutoFit row height.
Exact size
- Select the columns.
- Home › Format › Column Width, type e.g. 20.
- For rows: Home › Format › Row Height.
Make every cell the same size
- Click the triangle top-left of the grid (or Ctrl+A) to select everything.
- Drag any column edge. All columns change together.
- Do the same on a row edge.
One cell needs to look bigger
- Merge cells across columns — fine for titles, awkward for data.
- Wrap text so long text goes onto more lines.
Width in centimetres
View › Page Layout switches the units to cm/inches, handy for printing.
