How to Make Excel Cells Bigger (wider, taller, or all the same size)

You can’t resize one cell on its own — width belongs to the whole column and height to the whole row.

Drag to resize

  • Wider: drag the right edge of the column letter.
  • Taller: drag the bottom edge of the row number.

Fit the contents automatically

Double-click the right edge of the column letter. The column snaps to its longest entry. More in AutoFit columns and AutoFit row height.

Exact size

  1. Select the columns.
  2. Home › Format › Column Width, type e.g. 20.
  3. For rows: Home › Format › Row Height.

Make every cell the same size

  1. Click the triangle top-left of the grid (or Ctrl+A) to select everything.
  2. Drag any column edge. All columns change together.
  3. Do the same on a row edge.

One cell needs to look bigger

  • Merge cells across columns — fine for titles, awkward for data.
  • Wrap text so long text goes onto more lines.

Width in centimetres

View › Page Layout switches the units to cm/inches, handy for printing.
