How to Move a Column in Excel (without overwriting anything)

Dragging a column onto another one overwrites it. Hold Shift while you drag and Excel inserts it instead. That is the whole secret.

What you will do

Move City (column C) to sit before Sales (column B).

Steps: Shift + drag

1. Click the column letter C to select the whole column.
2. Move the mouse to the edge of the selection until the pointer becomes a four-headed arrow.
3. Hold Shift, then drag left. A green vertical line shows where the column will land.
4. Release the mouse when the line sits between A and B, then release Shift.

City is now column B; Sales moved right to C. Nothing was overwritten.

Steps: cut and insert (keyboard)

1. Click column letter C. Press Ctrl + X.
2. Right-click column letter B › Insert Cut Cells.

Swap two columns

Move B after C with Shift-drag, or move C before B — same result either way.

Check it worked

Formulas that used the moved column still work — Excel updates them. Look at one to confirm.

Common mistakes

No green line, just a grey outline — you forgot Shift. That would overwrite. Press Esc.

“Cannot change part of a merged cell” — a merged cell crosses the column. Unmerge it first.

Inside an Excel Table Shift-drag works the same, but drag the header cell rather than the column letter.
