How to Add a Header in Excel (printed header, not the heading row)

Two different things share the name. A heading row is row 1 of your data. A header is text printed at the top of every page — title, date, page number. This lesson is the printed header.

Steps

  1. Insert › Header & Footer. The sheet switches to Page Layout view with three boxes at the top.
  2. Click the middle box. Type the title, e.g. Sales Report.
  3. Click the right box. On the Header & Footer tab click Page Number, type of , click Number of Pages. It shows “Page 1 of 3” when printed.
  4. Click the left box › Current Date.
  5. Click any cell to leave. View › Normal to return to the usual view.

Add the file name or sheet name

Same tab: File Name, Sheet Name buttons.

Add a logo

Click a header box › Picture › choose the file. Then Format Picture to set its height (1.5 cm is plenty).

Footer

Same steps, scroll to the bottom of the page in Page Layout view, or click Go to Footer.

Check it worked

Ctrl + P. The preview shows the header on page 1; use the arrows to check page 2.

Want the heading row on every page instead?

That is Print Titles.
