How to Hide Gridlines in Excel (screen and print)

The light grey grid helps while you work, but a finished report looks cleaner without it.

Hide them

View tab › untick Gridlines. Or keyboard: Alt, W, V, G.

This affects only the current sheet and only the screen.

All sheets at once

Right-click a sheet tab › Select All Sheets › View › untick Gridlines. Then right-click › Ungroup Sheets — don’t forget, or your typing lands on every sheet.

Only part of the sheet

Select the range › Home › Fill Color › White. The fill covers the gridlines. Use No Fill to bring them back.

Printing is separate

Gridlines don’t print by default, whatever the screen shows. To print them: Page Layout › Sheet Options › Gridlines › tick Print. See print gridlines.

Want lines, just not grey ones?

Hide gridlines and add borders only where they help: select the cells › Home › Borders. Borders print and look deliberate.

Gridlines vanished and you want them back

  • View › tick Gridlines.
  • If still missing, the cells have a white fill — Home › Fill Color › No Fill.
  • Or the gridline colour was changed: File › Options › Advanced › Display options for this worksheet › Gridline colour › Automatic.
