Excel Merge Cells Shortcut: Alt H M M (and the safer alternative)
No single-key shortcut exists, but the ribbon keys are quick once your fingers know them.
Steps
- Select the cells to merge, e.g. A1:C1.
- Press Alt, then H, then M, then M — one after the other, not held down.
That is Merge Cells. Other endings:

Mac: no ribbon keys; use Home › Merge & Center, or add it to the Quick Access Toolbar.
Make a one-key shortcut
Right-click Merge & Center on the ribbon › Add to Quick Access Toolbar. If it is the 3rd item there, Alt + 3 now merges.
The safer alternative
Merged cells break sorting and selecting. Center Across Selection looks the same without the damage: select A1:C1 › Ctrl + 1 › Alignment › Horizontal: Center Across Selection. Full lesson: merge cells.
Check it worked
Click the merged area — a single selection outline covers all three cells, and the Name Box says A1.
