How to Insert a Page Break in Excel (and remove or see them)

Excel decides where pages end. A manual page break makes it end where you want — before each department, after each table.

Steps

  1. Click the cell in column A of the row that should start the new page. For a break before row 25, click A25.
  2. Page Layout › Breaks › Insert Page Break.

A dashed line appears above row 25.

See all the breaks

View › Page Break Preview. Blue lines are page edges: solid = manual, dashed = automatic. Drag any line to move it. View › Normal to go back.

Vertical break (columns onto a new page)

Click the cell in row 1 of the column that should start the new page, then Insert Page Break.

Remove one break

Click the cell just below (or right of) the break › Page Layout › Breaks › Remove Page Break.

Remove all

Page Layout › Breaks › Reset All Page Breaks.

Check it worked

Ctrl + P and page through the preview. Row 25 sits at the top of page 2.

Common mistakes

Break went in the wrong place. Clicking in the middle of the sheet inserts both a horizontal and a vertical break. Click in column A (or row 1) for one direction only.

Insert Page Break is greyed out. Fit-to-page scaling is on: Page Layout › Scale to Fit › set Width and Height to Automatic.
