How to Insert a Picture in an Excel Cell (so it moves with the cell)

Microsoft 365: Place in Cell

  1. Click the cell.
  2. Insert › Pictures › Place in Cell › This Device.
  3. Pick the image.

The picture becomes the cell’s value. It sorts, filters and resizes with the cell. Make the row taller for a bigger picture: make cells bigger.

A picture from the web: IMAGE

=IMAGE("https://example.com/mug.png")

Point it at a cell holding the address: =IMAGE(B2). The address must be https.

Older Excel: float it over the cell

  1. Insert › Pictures › This Device.
  2. Hold Alt and resize it — it snaps to the cell edges.
  3. Right-click › Format Picture › Size & Properties › Move and size with cells.

Now the picture follows its row when you sort or filter.

Switch between the two

Right-click a floating picture › Place in Cell, or right-click a cell picture › Place over Cells.

File too big?

Select a picture › Picture Format › Compress Pictures › untick Apply only to this picture.
